We're on a mission to get 20,000 people clean water this fall

Clean water is life and when it flows from a new tap so do opportunities that put families in control of their future!

Within weeks of having clean water minutes from their homes, health and vitality emerges among families. Hope rises and brings with it a vision of new opportunities.

In just months, families are able to invest the time they once spent sourcing water into schooling, livelihood training and small businesses. People start to see a way out of extreme poverty - and it all begins with water.

"We had hope and could see a better future," says Chhai, a mother in Cambodia who gained access to clean water.

HOPE is embarking on an ambitious initiative. Help 20,000 people get clean water this fall. Our vision is to invest into 100 taps in 100 days, opening access to clean water as soon as possible.

Your gift will ensure mothers like Shancote, in Ethiopia, won't ever again say, "We never know what's in our water. But we use it because we have no choice."

Dirty water should never be an option, let alone the only one. Join families as they construct their water systems and change their lives.

Transform lives with your gift of $75, $250, $500 towards the $5,000 it costs to make clean water flow from a brand new tap.

Children and youth in Ethiopia are tapping into their potential.

Recently, HOPE supporters committed to help children and youth in the slums of Addis who've lost one or both parents.

Children are getting the tools they need to build a future for themselves full of new opportunities.

Our partner in Addis reports children and youth are receiving life-transforming resources that will enable them to dream and achieve their goals, just like Natnael did when he became a Pharmacist.

Because of your generosity and new donors joining with us, children have increased access to:
  • Medical care, counselling, home visits
  • School uniforms and shoes, books, backpacks and school supplies
  • Transportation to and from school
  • Warm meals and food (or dry goods) to take home
These services and resources mean children can go and stay in school, play with friends, dream big dreams for their future and feel safe in their community.

Through your compassion in action, HOPE supporters like you are helping provide:

  • Emergency surgeries for people severely injured
  • Medical supplies and medications for community members injured
  • Counselling support to help people overcome trauma
  • Ongoing medical support through 4 nurses and 4 doctors

Because of your support, families and their communities will recover from this setback and move forward with hope.

HOPE has been standing with people in Haiti since 2010 when a massive earthquake leveled Port-au-Prince. Devastation has happened again.

Today, the 2,500 Haitian people we work with are very present in our thoughts and very much in need. Many in the 3 communities have been injured. Nearly all have lost their farms and with it, their family security.

As you know, 1,400 people were killed and more than 6,900 injured when a powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake levelled towns and villages 100 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince recently.

The weight of responsibility to 2,500 people weighs heavy. HOPE must send help to people that matter to us. We can't do everything, but we can help these families. Please, put your compassion into action again and send emergency relief to families in southwestern Haiti.

Your gift of $100, $250, $500 will provide urgently needed:

Food provisions

Temporary shelters

Medicines, such as antibiotics and pain relievers

Water purification tablets

The people of Ethiopia are precious to HOPE. It’s where our work began and our hearts are heavy right now knowing what families in the north are facing.Conflict surrounds the region and famine threatens so very many.  But we can take action and be tangible compassion.

HOPE is joining efforts with two like-minded agencies to send humanitarian relief for Tigrayan IDP’s and refugees to increase the collective impact of our efforts and to address a critical and dire situation facing people caught in the conflict plaguing Ethiopia.

Mothers and children are most at risk right now.  They are the focus of our efforts. UNICEF reports that 140,000 children are facing level 5 famine-like conditions in the area as a result of the Tigray crisis.

"There is the risk of a loss of life running into the hundreds of thousands or worse," says Mark Lowcock of the UN.

Given the size of the crisis, please be as generous as you can and make the most of the 4X match

Your gift of $100, $250, $500 will save even more lives when matched as it provides:

  • Emergency food provisions
  • Emergency shelter
  • Access to medical care

The strength and resiliency of people like Nadeeka means poverty can be overcome

Before HOPE supporters put their compassion into action, Nadeeka and her family struggled significantly. There was never enough food to eat, no medicine for her ailing son, and no job prospects to support her family.

Today, just one year later, Nadeeka is the proud owner of a thriving sewing business. The income she earns enables her to feed her family every day, pay tuition for her school aged children, buy medicine when needed and save for the future.

Nadeeka was even able to add a room to her modest home so her children, now excelling in school, have a place to study.

The same training and support Nadeeka received as a member of a HOPE-supported Self-Help group member will transform other families.

Putting compassion into action today will support women in their efforts to earn sustainable livelihoods through small businesses like rope making, mushroom growing, organic farming, dairy production and more.

On World Water Day we celebrate with families and communities in Africa, Asia and The Americas who are enjoying the life-transforming power of clean water today.

Access to clean water along with improved hygiene, safe sanitation and locally available health clinics and medicines gives people the ability to chart their course out of poverty.

In one year alone, as many as 374,000 participants take steps out of poverty through water, health and hygiene initiatives funded by generous HOPE supporters.

On World Water Day we also take time to think of how we can help families and communities who have not yet gained access to clean water: 1 in 10 people in the world lack access to clean water. Clean water is especially important during these times. In some places in Africa, 75% of people lack access to basic hand washing facilities. In places where clean water is not yet available, women and girls spend up to four hours a day, every day, collecting water. When clean water is available, women and girls get their lives back.

Clean water is the beginning of big change for families experiencing poverty.

Celebrate International Women's Day by putting tools in the hands of women entrepreneurs in Pakistan

We’re celebrating International Women’s Day, March 8, by launching In Her Hands, a fundraising campaign to raise $40,000 this month so 50 women can change their lives through a unique small business program made by women, for women.

For women participating in the small business program it is about more than earning an income; it is about the intentional integration of women into the economy through the encouragement of female entrepreneurship and leadership.

Sonia Bibi, a women entrepreneur in Pakistan, tells her story.
I became a widow when my husband died 15 years ago, I was only 40. I have four daughters and one son, all of whom were studying at that time and suddenly I had no income. So I began to work as a daily labourer, moulding bricks at a brickyard. But I was always worried about my safety there as I faced a lot of harassment as a single woman.

Someone from my village recommended I visit the office of Taangh Wasaib Organization (TWO), a HOPE and tell them about my story. I entered the program and started a business buying and selling goats.

How did the program help you?
In my toolkit I received a small grant to buy my first goats. Currently, I am doing animal trade on a small scale. I purchase goats from different villages at a lower price and sell them at the animal market. I also attend different training workshops organized by TWO which have built my skills and confidence to handle the needs of my business. My communication and bargaining skills are improving day by day. Now, I earn more than enough for all of my family expenses and have been able to expand my business activity. With the success of my business my family is eating good food, can access healthcare, my children are getting a good education, and we are not worried about the daily expenses anymore.

What are your hopes for the future?
I have a plan to establish my own animal farm in the future where the breeding also takes place - currently, I am reinvesting a portion of my profits to buy more goats.  I am also saving for my daughters’ weddings.  I hope for more prosperity at my home in the future.

What are you most proud of?
In a patriarchal society, I am the head of my family and am fulfilling all of family’s needs. I feel stronger and safer with the help of my business. I am becoming a successful businesswoman.

Join In Her Hands and help women in Pakistan change their lives.

Change Is In Her Hands

Empower 50 female entrepreneurs to change their lives in Sargodha, Pakistan through a unique small business program offered by women for women.

There is no shortage of capable women in Sargodha, only a shortage of opportunity for them to earn an income and participate equitably in the workforce.

Sobia is a talented seamstress, but the only jobs available pay too little to support her family. With her skills, Sobia knew she could start a thriving business.

In 2019, Sobia received business training and a custom toolkit complete with a sewing machine to get her started. Today, Sobia earns more than enough income to support her family of five and pay for her mother’s heart medication and her sibling’s school fees. Sobia dreams of starting a sewing centre to teach young women and help them start businesses – so they too, can support their families and chart their futures.

The unique small business program brings skilled women into small working groups where they create business plans, participate in leadership training and receive community mentorship. After their training, each woman entrepreneur handpicks items to build her toolkit; the missing pieces to launch her business.

You can help put the tools in her hands to build a better future:
  • $50 enables a small group of women to meet monthly for a year, supporting one another as they build their businesses
  • $130 provides business and leadership training for each small group participant
  • $250 provides networking meetings with heads of companies, non-profits and government departments to help participants grow their businesses
  • $800 (or $65 per month) provides a custom toolkit for one female entrepreneur

Sharing love so mothers in Honduras can keep sharing theirs

The realities of poverty will never overwhelm a mother’s love for her family. But those realities of extreme need are creating impossible situations for mothers to care for their families as their own health is under constant threat from illness and disease.

Life is hard in rural Honduras. In fact, six out of every ten households experience extreme poverty and are forced to try and survive on less than $3 a day.

To make matters even worse, health education, disease prevention training and health care services, including timely diagnosis and treatment of conditions and illnesses that can quickly become life-threatening, are nonexistent.

A recent women’s health survey in rural Honduras found that 92% of the more than 1,000 women examined had severe and acute infections, many of which will become life-threatening if left untreated.

A gift of $44 today is a gift of good health for a mother and hope for a family and can directly help 750 vulnerable women access:
  • Hygiene training, health education and support, significantly reducing the number of infections and illnesses
  • Timely diagnosis and treatment of infections and illnesses - before they become disabling or life-threatening. It will save lives
  • Training in the prevention of transmittable diseases. It will significantly reduce high rates of sickness and mortality. When disease is detected, immediate treatment will be available
  • Early detection of cancer and assistance. Help navigating treatment at specialized health care facilities in major centres will save lives

More HOPE. More People. More Possibility.

In 2020 HOPE celebrated 45 years of the transformational power of compassion and generosity that has transformed the lives of more than 25 million people. HOPE supporters believed in the possibility of people and said "yes" over and over as they invested in their potential.

Despite a difficult year for many people around the world, including here in Canada, compassionate people exceeded our expectations of what was possible. In the face of a year that told us to be apart - they were a declaration of the hope that rises when we join together.

In 2021 HOPE will continue to be compelled by the inherent worth, potential and dignity of every person as we keep working together to ensure even more families have access to clean water, food security and learning opportunities that help enable people to step out of extreme poverty.

Together, we'll continue to equip and empower possibility through approaches that are locally initiated, sustainable and permanent with a focus on clean water, food security and livelihoods.
